An Easy and Affordable Fall Craft for Your Cozy Home

Who knew that leftover plastic Easter eggs could transform into charming little fabric acorns perfect for fall? In today’s tutorial, I’ll show you how I turned a handful of plastic eggs and fabric scraps into the cutest primitive bowl fillers. These rustic acorns add a warm, handmade touch to your seasonal decor — and best of all, they’re incredibly budget-friendly!

This craft is simple, relaxing, and doesn’t require any fancy tools. You can personalize them with different fabrics or textures to suit your home’s style — I used some crochet chains to add a lovely, finished look.

Let’s get started!

🧡 Supplies You’ll Need

Fabric remnants in fall colors or patterns

A round object to trace (approx. 6” or 4” diameter depend of the size of the eggs you have. Mine were larger ones)

Plastic Easter eggs (medium to large size works best)

Needle and thread

Hot glue gun

Twine or handmade crochet chain

Twigs or stems from outside (for the acorn top)

Scissors

Optional: Crochet hook (if making your own chain)

πŸ‚ Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Cut Your Fabric Circles

Choose your fall-themed fabric and trace a 6” circle using a bowl or any round object. Cut out the fabric circle. You’ll need one circle per acorn.

2. Sew a Running Stitch Around the Edge

Thread your needle and sew a loose running stitch around the edge of the fabric circle. Pull slightly to create a pouch shape — this will help it fit nicely over your plastic egg.

3. Cover the Egg Top

Place the fabric over one half of the plastic egg (the rounded side). Tighten your thread to gather the fabric and secure it in place.

Add a small dab of hot glue just under the stitched edge to keep the fabric from slipping.

4. Wrap the Edge with Twine or Crochet Chain

To give your acorn a finished look, wrap twine or a simple crochet chain around the stitched edge, gluing as you go. I used a basic crochet chain made from leftover yarn — it added a soft, rustic charm.

5. Add a Twig Stem

Break a small twig to size and hot glue it to the top center of your fabric-covered egg. This creates the perfect acorn stem and gives it that foraged, woodland feel.

🍁 How to Style Your Fabric Acorns

Your fabric acorns are now ready! These make adorable bowl fillers, look lovely in a rustic basket, or can even be used as part of a fall centerpiece. Group them with pinecones, dried leaves, or miniature pumpkins for a charming harvest display.

πŸ’‘ Tips & Variations

Mix and match fabrics for a patchwork effect.

Use thrifted or repurposed fabric to keep costs low.

Add cinnamon sticks or dried orange slices nearby for a natural fall scent.

Final Thoughts

Crafting doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. With just a few humble materials and a little imagination, you can create seasonal decor that adds a handmade warmth to your home. I hope you enjoy making these rustic fabric acorns as much as I did!
