🍂 Welcoming Fall. A Little Early, But Who’s Counting?

Some people wait until the calendar officially says September 23rd before they bring out the pumpkins, but not me. After a few rainy days, I couldn’t help myself. Summer décor was packed away, and out came the warm, familiar colors of fall. Suddenly my home felt like it was wearing its favorite knitted sweater — and honestly, so was I.

There’s something deeply satisfying about the Clear & Reset stage. Once the deep cleaning was done, candles lit, and the cozy corners decorated, I had this delicious sense of calm. In the mornings, I sit with my coffee watching the soft light come in, and in the evenings, it’s tea with that cooler breeze slipping through the window. There’s a little magic in that shift of seasons, isn’t there? A reminder of childhood autumns — crunchy leaves underfoot, the smell of woodsmoke in the air, and that anticipation of school starting (though thankfully, no homework for me these days!).

I also had a very productive pioneer moment in the kitchen. Cabbage turned into sauerkraut (my grandmother would be proud), tomatoes diced and tucked away in the freezer, and a batch of apricot jam bubbling on the stove. Honestly, if I had a gingham apron and a root cellar, I could have starred in one of those nostalgic “homestead living” magazines.

I made in total 8 jars to enjoy with pancakes and a cup of coffee.

Decorating was another kind of adventure. Instead of running to the shops, I went shopping in my own home — digging into my trusty décor bin. (It’s like a lucky dip every year; I never quite remember what’s in there!) A few pieces I knew I wouldn’t use found new homes through Marketplace sales. One person’s “dusty pumpkin” is another’s treasure, right?

So yes, maybe it’s a little early for fall décor. But after this first week of my gentle break plan, I feel reset, refreshed, and just a little smug about those jars and bags of veggies lined up for winter. Bring on Week Two — I’m ready.

✨ Tell me, friends — do you start decorating for fall early, or do you wait until the calendar insists it’s official? And are you team “preserve everything for winter,” or do you prefer to simply enjoy the moment? I’d love to hear how you’re welcoming this cozy season in your own homes.

  1. You certainly have rested and found refreshment in slowing down and taking care of yourself and your cozy home. It all looks so inviting. It is just beginning to cool down and bit with noticeable earlier sunsets, but still long sunny days. I am holding on to summer a bit longer as I am still working on cleaning up my garden and flower beds after a late start due to travel and weather. AND I want to take some time to visit some thrift shops to look for autumn paintings or prints. I had never thought of switching up some of my wall art but have had some encourgement watching another retired woman in Colorado who decorates her small home for the seasons on a frugal budget. Though I miss the your videos I am learning from your wise choices as I typical am always saying Yes and overcommitting myself.

    1. I hope you found Autumn prints and managed to switch your art on a budget.
You would be amazed what you can find in the Thrift shops.

  2. I will begin to decorate in September. You have inspired me to freeze and can even if for one! So I have frozen fresh green beans. I may just try doing the tomatoes after mine ripen more. I would like to try sauerkraut but have never tried. I did make peach jam last week as peaches are being harvested here now. And recently I began making Kefir. I still so enjoy being a homemaker even as a widow and kids all adults.

    1. Hello,
I love freezing as it saves me money, haven’t freeze green beans as I buy the already frozen from the shops. Making son sauerkraut definetly saves money and it is good for our health. Me too I do enjoy the homemaking.
Thank you for your sweet comment.
