Turning an Old Straw Hat into a Charming Planter Cover

Sometimes the simplest items can find a second life with a little imagination. This week, I gave new purpose to an old straw hat that had been sitting at the back of my closet — and turned it into a rustic planter cover with character and charm.

🧡 Materials I Used:

  • One old straw hat
  • Acrylic paint + a number stencil
  • Needle and jute string
  • A small potted ivy plant

πŸͺ‘ The Simple Transformation:

I started by stenciling a number on the front of the hat using basic acrylic paint. I chose a soft black, weathered tone to give it a vintage farmhouse feel.

Next, I roughly gathered the brim of the hat using a wide needle and a length of natural jute string. It didn’t need to be perfect — in fact, the slightly uneven gathering added to its charm. I gently pulled the string to tighten it around the pot and tied a little bow at the back.

To finish it off, I slipped in a lovely ivy plant. The contrast of green leaves spilling from the straw hat gave the whole setup such a relaxed, lived-in feel — perfect for  the counter in my kitchen.

πŸƒ Why I Love This Project:

It was quick, cost me nothing, and turned something forgotten into something fresh and meaningful. There’s something special about giving everyday objects a new story — and this little hat planter now brings me joy every time I pass by it.

πŸ“Œ A Simple, Frugal Joy

Upcycling doesn’t have to be complicated or fussy. Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of string, a splash of paint, and a little greenery to create something beautiful.

Would you try something like this with an old hat of your own?
