Transforming Oyster Shell Finds into Beautiful Trinkets

Transforming Oyster Shell Finds into Beautiful Trinkets

Transforming Oyster Shell Finds into Beautiful Trinkets

Gold painted Oyster shells, jewellery holder

There’s something magical about strolling along Vancouver's beaches, the cool breeze, the sound of the waves, and the unexpected treasures hiding in the sand. One of my favourite finds has  been oyster shells—each one a little piece of nature’s art. Over time, I've turned this humble beach discovery into something special, a project that combines the beauty of nature with a touch of artistic flair.

After gathering a collection of oyster shells on a recent beach walk, I brought them home to begin the transformation process. The first step was to wash and bleach them, ensuring they were clean and pristine. I left them to dry in the sun for a full week, letting the natural light work its magic.

Once dried, I started painting some of the shells in a beautiful, rich gold. The way the metallic paint caught the light felt luxurious and gave the shells an entirely new life. For some, I decided to add a delicate, floral touch. Using tissue and napkins with soft floral designs, I carefully glued them onto the shells. When it dried I gently filed with mail file all edges to remove access paper. The combination of gold and floral patterns created an eye-catching contrast that felt both elegant and whimsical.

To ensure these pieces would last, I applied a coat of acrylic varnish over each shell, sealing in the color and protecting the delicate designs. The result? Stunning little oyster shell boxes with lids, perfect for holding trinkets or simply displaying as unique décor pieces.

Whether sitting on a vanity or given as a thoughtful gift, these oyster shell creations are both beautiful and functional. I’m thrilled with how they turned out—each one feels like a tiny treasure, a nod to the natural beauty of Vancouver's shores and a testament to the transformative power of a little creativity.

Transforming a Free Oak Chair into a Farmhouse Masterpiece: A DIY Adventure

Transforming a Free Oak Chair into a Farmhouse Masterpiece: A DIY Adventure.

Transforming a Free Oak Chair into a Farmhouse Masterpiece: A DIY Adventure
Oak chair before DIY transformation

Sometimes the best DIY projects start with a bit of serendipity. That was the case for me when I stumbled upon a free oak chair on the marketplace. A sturdy seat destined for a new home, it had the potential to be much more. And with a bit of creativity and elbow grease, I transformed it into a charming farmhouse-style chair as a decor piece in my hallway, it is also perfect for sitting down when putting  the shooes on.

The Journey Begins

Obtaining the chair was an adventure in itself. Without a car, I had to take two buses to pick it up. As I lugged this solid oak piece onto the bus, the driver couldn't resist a bit of humor, quipping about how many seats there were on the bus and how I didn't need to bring my own. His joke added a touch of levity to my journey and set the tone for the project ahead.

The Chair’s Potential

Upon collecting the chair, I was pleased to find it in excellent condition. The oak was sturdy and the seat was well-crafted—no need for a major overhaul. However, to integrate it into my hallway’s decor, which features a farmhouse cabinet, I decided a little transformation was in order. The goal was to match the chair to the existing farmhouse aesthetic.

Painting and Stenciling: A Farmhouse Makeover

  1. Preparation: I started by giving the chair a thorough cleaning to remove any dust or grime. Then, I lightly sanded the surface to ensure the paint would adhere well. A quick wipe-down with a damp cloth followed to remove any sanding residue.
  2. Painting: I chose a soft, creamy white paint to evoke that classic farmhouse feel. A high-quality acrylic paint worked best for this project, providing a smooth finish and durability. I applied two coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
  3. Stenciling: To add a bit of personality and charm, I used a French script  stencil pattern. I opted for a subtle design that wouldn’t overwhelm the chair but would add a distinct, vintage touch. Using a small stencil brush, I carefully applied a muted gray color over the stenciled areas, ensuring a crisp, clean look.
  4. Finishing Touches: Once the paint and stencil were dry, I applied a clear sealant to protect the finish and add a slight sheen. This step was crucial for durability, especially since the chair would be used here and there.

The Final Result

The transformation was a success! The chair now complements the hallway cabinet beautifully, adding a touch of farmhouse charm. It’s a sturdy, stylish and the stencil detail brings a unique, personal touch that ties everything together.

Reflecting on the Journey

This DIY project was more than just a makeover; it was a testament to the joy of upcycling and the satisfaction of creating something special from a simple find. The bus ride, with its humorous interlude, became a memorable part of the adventure. And now, every time I use the chair, it’s a reminder of the creativity and effort that went into making it a cherished piece of my  home.

Turning Leftover Candle Bits into Beautiful Homemade Candles

Turning Leftover Candle Bits into Beautiful Homemade Candles

A Creative and Frugal DIY Project

Handmade, crochet candle wick

It is a Russian superstition not spending money on Mondays. I try to stick with this old superstition and keep myself busy at home with DIY and craft projects.
Spent the afternoon making candles using leftover bits from old ones I had around the house. I added some lovely scented oils I brought from the UK – I’ve got 17 bottles in total from a farewell gift set. Since I didn’t have wicks, I crocheted my own using thin cotton yarn from my stash! It worked out perfectly.

I melted the old candles in a jar placed in a pot of water, kept an eye on it for 45 minutes, and then carefully poured the wax into a mix of glass and ceramic containers I already had. I’m so happy with how they turned out – I made six large and small candles, and they smell and look gorgeous. Considering how pricey candles are these days ($10-$15 each!), these beauties cost me nothing but time. This is what I call being creative, frugal, and resourceful!

Painted and ready for stencilling…

On a recent stroll through my neighbourhood, I stumbled upon a house under construction. Among the debris, I noticed a pile of scrap wood that sparked an idea. I asked the contractors if I could take a few small blocks for a DIY project, and to my surprise, they jokingly offered the entire pile. Intrigued, I brought the wood home and began a delightful transformation.

I cleaned and sanded the blocks to prepare them for their new life. With a fresh coat of paint and a touch of black acrylic stenciling, each block started to take shape. I meticulously worked on the edges to give them a refined look, and for the stems, I ventured to the park and gathered some sticks.

The result? Adorable, handcrafted wooden pumpkins that perfectly capture the essence of autumn. My total spending was $3.36 for craft paint from local shop called Dollarama. On Etsy wooden pumpkins are over $15.00 each. I’m thrilled with how they turned out and plan to keep a couple for myself. The rest are available for sale, so if you’re looking for a unique fall decoration, feel free to reach out!

How I Saved Money by Drying My Own Homegrown Herbs

How I Saved Money by Drying My Own Homegrown Herbs

Since my retirement and moving back to Canada I created a mini garden on my balcony. Not having a green thumb I was pleased with my herbs and cherry tomatoes. I decided to dry my homegrown herbs—dill, parsley, green onion, and chives. It was such a simple process and a great way to save a few dollars since dried herbs can be quite expensive at the store.

After harvesting, I washed and patted them dry, cut them then spread them out on trays and placed in a dry area for a few days. Once they were completely dried I stored them in glass jars. Now, I have a fresh supply of flavourful herbs that will last me through the fall and winter seasons! It’s a practical, easy DIY project that makes use of what I already have growing at home.

Fall Decor Project: Pumpkin Spice Season Book Stack

As the crisp fall air settles in, I wanted to bring a touch of seasonal charm to my home with a unique, personalized and affordable fall decor project. I’m thrilled with how it turned out, and I’m excited to share the details with you!

For this project, I decided to create a stylish stack of three books that would add a pop of autumnal color and a cozy vibe to my space. Here’s how I did it:

1. Choosing the Books: I started with three old books that I found on a curb during my morning walks. They didn’t need to be in perfect condition since they would be getting a makeover.

2. Painting the Covers: I gave each book a fresh look by painting them in rich fall colors—black, orange, and teal. These shades not only complement each other beautifully but also capture the essence of the season.

This is your first paragraph of content.

This is your next paragraph of content.

3. Adding the Text: Once the paint was dry, I added a bit of sparkle with gold letters from Dollarama for $1.25. I glued the words "Pumpkin Spice Season" onto the spines of the books. This touch makes the stack both festive and inviting.

4. Tying it Together: To finish, I wrapped the stack with a simple piece of twine. This added a rustic element that perfectly suits the fall theme. As a final touch, I placed a pumpkin from Dollar Tree for $1.50.

The pumpkin adds a charming touch to the decor.

5. Displaying the Decor: The finished book stack looks fantastic on a shelf, coffee table, or entryway. It’s a versatile piece that enhances any space with a warm and welcoming autumn feel.

I’m incredibly pleased with how this project turned out. It’s a simple yet effective way to infuse some seasonal spirit into my home. If you’re looking for an easy and creative fall decor idea, this book stack might just be the perfect project for you!

Handmade Fall Decor on a Budget: DIY Pumpkins, Wreaths, and Topiary

Handmade Fall Decor on a Budget: DIY Wreath

Handmade Fall Decor on a Budget: DIY Fabric Pumpkins

As someone who recently moved back to Canada after living abroad, I found myself without many seasonal decorations. While strolling through a local stores, I picked up a few pumpkins, but to my surprise, they were much pricier than I expected. Being on a budget, I quickly realized that I needed to get creative. So, instead of splurging on expensive decor, I decided to shop at home. Here’s what I made from old clothing items, fabric scraps, and other supplies from my crafting stash.

1. DIY Fabric Pumpkins Using some fabric scraps and old clothing items, I made the cutest fabric pumpkins. These can be crafted from virtually any material you have on hand – think old flannel shirts, sweaters, or even leftover fabric from previous projects. I stuffed them with some cotton filling and tied the tops with twine. You can also add real or faux stems, or even twigs from your backyard for a rustic touch. I also used wine corks with glued twine around. The result? Beautiful pumpkins that cost next to nothing and will make a lovely display.

2. Fall Wreath For the wreath, I purchased a wreath from Dollarama for $3.00 (with the change I had from returned empties)but you could easily use a cardboard cutout as a base. I added faux leaves, and artificial flowers from my stash. Some hot glue, a little patience, and voilà – a charming wreath perfect for hanging on the front door. To personalize it, I added a couple of my own handmade mini fabric pumpkins. The best part is it’s fully customizable based on what you have available.

Handmade Fall Decor on a Budget: DIY Topiary

3. DIY Topiary

The topiary was another fun project using items I already had. I had 3 different sizes of wicker candle holders given to my by my daughter. I was hesitating to use them lighting candles so I came up with a better idea.

Stacking  them on top of each other and securing them with hot glue then decorated with items I had on hand. I created a simple, yet elegant, pumpkin topiary. It will be a beautiful focal point for my balcony and an excellent way to greet the season.

The Beauty of Handmade on a Budget

Not only did these DIY fall decorations save me money, but they also allowed me to recycle materials I already had. The result is a cozy, personalized fall display that brings a bit of seasonal magic into my home without breaking the bank.

I encourage anyone else looking to decorate on a budget to look around your home and see what materials you can repurpose. A little creativity goes a long way, and your handmade pieces will always have more character than anything store-bought!

Happy crafting!

A Healing Journey on Mother’s Day

A Healing Journey on Mother’s Day

White Rick, a seaside town in British Columbia
There is a legend about the massive White Rock laying on the shore.

Yesterday, on Mother's Day, I embarked on a poignant journey to White Rock, a place filled with memories of my mother. With a heart full of emotions, I made my way to the cemetery where she rests, carrying flowers to honor her. The journey, though physically distant from Metrotown, was emotionally closer than ever.

The train ride followed by a bus journey allowed me time to reflect the moments shared and the ones lost. Guilt had long weighed heavy on my heart for not being there to hold her hand as she transitioned in 2012. But amidst the beauty of White Rock, I found solace, a balm for the soul.

The cemetery, nestled in the tranquil surroundings, became a sacred space where I could pay my respects, lay flowers, and finally find some closure. And as I gazed upon the serene landscape, I felt a sense of peace wash over me, knowing that she was at rest.

After my visit, I decided to embrace the beauty of the day and explore more of White Rock. Taking another bus, I found myself at the seaside, where the fresh air and the soothing sound of waves welcomed me. Walking along the picturesque promenade, I couldn't help but marvel at the breathtaking views, and the playful seagulls dancing in the sky.

The thought of exploring the path all the way to the border crossing ignited a sense of adventure within me, promising an adventure for my next visit.

With a heart full of gratitude and a renewed sense of energy, I returned home, carrying with me the memories of a day well spent. White Rock had offered me not only solace but also the opportunity to reconnect with nature, with myself, and with the cherished memories of my mother.

As the sun set on the horizon, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that in White Rock, amidst the beauty of nature, I had found healing and peace. It was indeed a very good day, a day filled with love, remembrance, and the promise of new beginnings.
